Definition of the verb

A verb is a word that shows an action, state, or possession.

Example- 

Sita reads a book.

I am a doctor.


Gopi is ill.

ram has a car.




Type of verb


 Stative vs dynamic verb


1.stative verb

the verb that shows a state or possession.

Example-

I am a teacher

Gopi is ill.

I like chocolates.

I have a car.

I love this novel



2.Dynamic verb

The verb which shows a physical action is called dynamic or action verb.

Example-

I play cricket.

She is cooking.

He writes a letter.

My father works in the mnc company.


they are working in the field.




Main vs helping verb

1.Main/principal/ordinary/lexical verb

The verb which is of the main importance in the sentence is called the main verb.

Example-

I read.

Ram is playing.

Ram is ill.

They were absent.

My father takes a tea.



2.Helping /auxiliary verb

The verb which helps the main verb to form a tense, voice, or mood is called a helping verb.

Example-

I am reading.

I was reading.

I shall/will read.

A mango is eaten by the ram.

It may rain today.

They should go.

There are 28 auxiliaries (helping) verbs-

primary auxiliaries

be, being, been, is, am, are, was were, have, has,

 had, having, do, does, did

modal auxiliaries

shall, will, can, may, should, would, could, might,

 must, ought to, used to, dare, need

 

Types of main verb
 

Finite vs nonfinite verb

1.Finite verb

The verb changes its forms according to the person and number of the subject and tense.

Example-


I play cricket.


He plays cricket.


He played cricket.


I love icecream.


She loves icecream.


Ram loved icecream.


2. Non-finite verb


The verb which is not affected by the subject or tense of the sentence is called a non-finite verb.


Example-


 I want to play.


He wants to play.


He wanted to play.


Gerund


walking is an exercise


playing is good for health.


 Participle


I am playing.


He was playing.


There is a broken table in this room.


There was a broken table in this room.



Transitive vs intransitive verb


 1.Transitive verb


The verb used with an object is called a transitive verb.


Example-


I love my country.


Ram is reading a book.


My father loves me .


I respect my teacher.


You are working in your office.


 
2.Intransitive verb


The verb used without an object.


Example-


Ram is reading.


He eats.


I run fast.


I am playing.


The baby cries.




Regular vs irregular verb


1.Regular verb


The verb which makes a past form by using ed and also makes past participle form by using ed is called a regular verb.


Example-


play             played            played

2.Irregular verb


The verb which past and past participle form different is called an irregular verb.


Example-
